Season's readings from the McKelvie Library! I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season.  Only three more days until our holiday break.  Cherish the time with your family and children! Enjoy all the magic that the holidays always seem to bring even if it is on the quieter side this year. Be sure to take some time to curl up with a good book!  Please find HERE a new addition to our school library website. I have created a Virtual Book Tasting that students can enjoy at their leisure with earbuds. In years past, the library has been transformed into a restaurant of sorts,  complete with table numbers, tablecloths, flameless candles, and books on plates. This was a fun event where students had an opportunity to "sample" books at tables consisting of various genres in the library. Due to COVID, this cannot safely happen right now so, I devised an alternate opportunity for our r...

The holidays have arrived at McKelvie! There are 66 new titles ready for our readers and researchers to check out! Click HERE to see an Adobe Spark of the new "presents" which have arrived just in time for the holidays! HERE is the link to Destiny Discover at the McKelvie Library. They are now available for your child(ren) to place a hold on. Please be sure to check out the images HERE , HERE , and HERE of students in the Opitz/Parnell POD taking notes Coronavirus style! The students were absolutey AMAZING as they navigated from station to station taking notes about subtopics under the "umbrella topic" of Westward Expansion! They successfully selected texts from labeled tables and took notes on our library carpet while wearing rubber gloves so the books could stay out of quarantine. The act of taking notes from print materials can still happen with some minor adjustments and the willingness to adapt. Have a festive holiday weekend! ~Mrs. Cote 📚

I hope everyone had a healthy and relaxing five-day vacation! Upon our return, I was able to check in with many of our students and it appears that the break allowed for some much needed pleasure reading! For many of our students, reading is a personal journey and many are using reading for pleasure as an escape during these unprecedented times. For children and adults, books are a form of escapism!  All of the Draper/Sevilla POD came to the library this week to explore EBSCO's NoveList K-8 Plus! After learning how to utilize and navigate this database, students explored Destiny for read-alikes to their initial search in NoveList K-8 Plus. They also had an opportunity to "book shop" and check out new titles to read and add to their TBR (To be read) piles! Click HERE to see students in the blue Draper/Sevilla cohort reading while maintaing social distancing. I am thrilled that our students are still able to use our school library, both in person and online! Our school lib...

Please make sure that your child(ren) have at least one "Good Fit" book and another in the "pipeline" for the 5 days off from school. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy some pleasure reading. Be sure to find some time to relax and read, McKelvie! If you have a car ride or some fireside downtime, please remember that Sora is an amazing option if you and your family would like to listen to an audiobook! With the Sora app downloaded, you will never be without a great book! Personally, I have found Sora to be a great source of entertainment during car rides as it keeps backseat occupants engaged (minumal squabbling and less attention seeking from the driver)! 📚 😊 This is an additional reminder that there is an app for Destiny Discover so that the students can listen to audiobooks we have right in our Destiny catalog. Students can also read eBooks from Destiny. Students can do this via their school issued Chromebooks or from the app on a personal device (phone or t...

It is hard to think that we only have one more full week of school before the two-day week before Thanksgiving! This past week we had Mr. Crowell's ELA classes, as well as some of Mrs. Correia's classes, in the library for lessons about how to use our EBSCO subscription database, NoveList K-8 Plus, as a reader's advisory tool. This year, given our unique learning schedule, I am encouraging the students to always have a "Good Fit" book in their hands and another one in the "pipeline." Given our schedule, it is not always possible to get to our school library! Please check in with your child about the "Good Fit" book they are reading and the other one they are ready to dive into! Don't forget about Sora (our eBook and audiobook platform) and the amazing Bedford Public Library as well!  We continue to fulfill holds which students are placing through Destiny Discover! I am so proud of the students and how well they navigate this system. The hol...
