Thank you to all of the McKelvie families and staff who consistently read my weekly updates! I am grateful for all of your support this year. What a year it has been... 

I have had two takeaways from last spring and the current school year. One being that continued and consistent book access is imperative, not only during a "regular" year but also during a "pandemic year." SO many of our students used our library and the books, not only to discover and learn, but also to escape to a world different from the world we carefully navigated for over a year. For many of the students, reading provided a sense of comfort. Getting lost in a character's world has provided a simple break from what we have all maneuvered this past year. 

Additionally, I have been completely amazed at how resilient our students have been. I continue to be impressed with how well they have adapted to all of the changes we have faced! It has been amazing to watch and talk with them.

Please, please have your child check their Destiny Library account. By now all McKelvie issued library books should be returned. For most homerooms, textbooks should also be off of their accounts. There are a few more homerooms scheduled to return textbooks early next week. Unfortunately, fines will be assessed and bills will be sent home by the end of the week for any outstanding library books or textbooks. I would much rather have all of the books we started the year with than the funds. Thank you for your understanding. 

The dates and times for the remote collections of library books, textbooks, and Chromebooks are listed below. Drop off will occur on the Country Road side of the school under the canopy.

Thursday, June 10th from 3:30-4:30 
Friday, June 11th from 10:00-11:00 (the last day of school) 
Monday, June 14th from 9:00-11:00

Fifth graders will be returning a Wonders Reading/Writing Workshop textbook and a Wonders Literature Anthology textbook.

Sixth graders are returning a green Big Ideas Math textbook and possibly a red Big Ideas Math Excel textbook. 

This will be my last Library News blog post for this year.  However, I want to share the link found HERE to a page dedicated to summer reading! On this page, you will find the dates and times that the McKelvie Library will be open for "Relax and Read" events as well as other resources I feel are valuable. I would love to see our rising 4th through 7th graders this summer. Please take a moment to view this page. Feel free to reach out via email with any questions.

Happy October, McKelvie! With cooler temperatures upon us, it is a perfect time to “leaf through a good book.” 🍂  Please click HERE for one of our lightbox displays greeting students and staff in our halls outside of the library.  Classes continue to come to the library to work on creating a Destiny Collection to track their independent reading this school year. Mrs. Parnell came with her class on Thursday to create a collection. HERE is an image of us getting started from the McKelvie website. The classes have been engaged and excited to track what they have read digitally. Be sure to ask your child what “good fit” book they are reading independently.  Our new buddy bookshelf has been assembled! Mr. Dave Orleans, our day lead custodian, helped put together our shelf and secure it to the wall. Amy Poisson (McKelvie Enrichment Teacher) and Julie Cote (McKelvie Librarian) are excited to offer a new opportunity for students, our first ever before-school book club! The book we have chosen is a 2018-2019 Great Stone Face Nominee by popular Maine author, Andrew Clements. The title of our selection is The Losers Club. Registration Closes on Monday, October 8, 2018, at 5:00 pm . You may click the registration link HERE until the 8th at 5:00 pm. A confirmation email regarding your child’s participation will be sent by Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Thank you! Last Friday we had a furry visitor at the McKelvie Library! Gus, a certified therapy dog, and his owner Barbara Sofield came to visit during the 5th and 6th grade recess times. Both students and staff were thrilled to visit with Gus. We had our first class of the year come to the McKelvie Library to "taste books!" The tables were covered in McKelvie blue tablecloths complete with golden plates showcasing various books, vases with student-made origami flowers, flameless candles, and table reservation numbers. The students were greeted by the “chef” and listened to theme music as they entered. This was a unique and fun way to expose students to various genres of books as well as first books in a series! Reading five minute "bites or samples" of these books enabled students to self select books they found interesting and might want to check out. Click HERE to see a student sampling one of our books at the tasting. Books have been flying out of our library following these tastings. It was wonderful to hear so many students who were excited about the books they sampled. It was fun to “stir” up some excitement for reading in our school library.
