Last Friday we had a furry visitor at the McKelvie Library! Gus, a certified therapy dog, and his owner Barbara Sofield came to visit during the 5th and 6th grade recess times. Both students and staff were thrilled to visit with Gus. Click HERE to see Gus, Mrs. Sofield, and two 6th grade McKelvie students. Gus and Mrs. Sofield will be making regular appearances on Fridays to the McKelvie Library beginning October 19th.

Congratulations to our 1st Search Slip winner of the year! 5th grader, Lilly McCann, along with MANY others, entered our monthly library raffle by filling out a Search Slip with information regarding the book they are looking for in the McKelvie Library. Each month all of the Search Slips are collected and one winner is drawn from all of the entries for the month. Click HERE to see Lilly’s Search Slip and the envelope containing a gift certificate for a sweet treat!

Happy October, McKelvie! With cooler temperatures upon us, it is a perfect time to “leaf through a good book.” 🍂  Please click HERE for one of our lightbox displays greeting students and staff in our halls outside of the library.  Classes continue to come to the library to work on creating a Destiny Collection to track their independent reading this school year. Mrs. Parnell came with her class on Thursday to create a collection. HERE is an image of us getting started from the McKelvie website. The classes have been engaged and excited to track what they have read digitally. Be sure to ask your child what “good fit” book they are reading independently.  Our new buddy bookshelf has been assembled! Mr. Dave Orleans, our day lead custodian, helped put together our shelf and secure it to the wall. I intend on adding books with two or more copies to the new shelf to promote budding reading and talking about books. It is an opportunity to foster literacy and conversatio...

We had our first class of the year come to the McKelvie Library to "taste books!" The tables were covered in McKelvie blue tablecloths complete with golden plates showcasing various books, vases with student-made origami flowers, flameless candles, and table reservation numbers. The students were greeted by the “chef” and listened to theme music as they entered. This was a unique and fun way to expose students to various genres of books as well as first books in a series! Reading five minute "bites or samples" of these books enabled students to self select books they found interesting and might want to check out. Click HERE to see a student sampling one of our books at the tasting. Books have been flying out of our library following these tastings. It was wonderful to hear so many students who were excited about the books they sampled. It was fun to “stir” up some excitement for reading in our school library. Currently, more reservations are being booked. Stay tune...
