It was wonderful to see the many Grandparents/Special Friends visiting our school today! The library was a busy place as these important people came to see our space and how it is different from the school libraries they attended! Many of the special individuals who visited the McKelvie Library completed a small "classwork" assignment. On a Post-it Note, they wrote their grandchild's name, their name, and a special book they recall reading during 5th or 6th grade. These notes are on display at the library! A "Lunch and Learn" session will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019, for all interested 5th & 6th-grade students. Grace Larochelle, Head of Children's Services at the Bedford Public Library, will be here to discuss the summer reading program as well as the opportunity to become a Jr. Librarian. She will be conducting 4 sessions during lunch times. A nut safe table will be established for these sessions. Interested students will be allowed to carry their lunch from the cafeteria or bring their lunch to the library to listen and learn!

Happy October, McKelvie! With cooler temperatures upon us, it is a perfect time to “leaf through a good book.” 🍂  Please click HERE for one of our lightbox displays greeting students and staff in our halls outside of the library.  Classes continue to come to the library to work on creating a Destiny Collection to track their independent reading this school year. Mrs. Parnell came with her class on Thursday to create a collection. HERE is an image of us getting started from the McKelvie website. The classes have been engaged and excited to track what they have read digitally. Be sure to ask your child what “good fit” book they are reading independently.  Our new buddy bookshelf has been assembled! Mr. Dave Orleans, our day lead custodian, helped put together our shelf and secure it to the wall. Amy Poisson (McKelvie Enrichment Teacher) and Julie Cote (McKelvie Librarian) are excited to offer a new opportunity for students, our first ever before-school book club! The book we have chosen is a 2018-2019 Great Stone Face Nominee by popular Maine author, Andrew Clements. The title of our selection is The Losers Club. Registration Closes on Monday, October 8, 2018, at 5:00 pm . You may click the registration link HERE until the 8th at 5:00 pm. A confirmation email regarding your child’s participation will be sent by Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Thank you! Last Friday we had a furry visitor at the McKelvie Library! Gus, a certified therapy dog, and his owner Barbara Sofield came to visit during the 5th and 6th grade recess times. Both students and staff were thrilled to visit with Gus. We had our first class of the year come to the McKelvie Library to "taste books!" The tables were covered in McKelvie blue tablecloths complete with golden plates showcasing various books, vases with student-made origami flowers, flameless candles, and table reservation numbers. The students were greeted by the “chef” and listened to theme music as they entered. This was a unique and fun way to expose students to various genres of books as well as first books in a series! Reading five minute "bites or samples" of these books enabled students to self select books they found interesting and might want to check out. Click HERE to see a student sampling one of our books at the tasting. Books have been flying out of our library following these tastings. It was wonderful to hear so many students who were excited about the books they sampled. It was fun to “stir” up some excitement for reading in our school library.
