This is a friendly reminder that overdue notices are being auto-generated on Tuesday mornings at 7:00 am. Please help your child(ren) to keep their Destiny Library account up-to-date and accurate. If a book is due on a day your child is not in school, please have them return it the next day they are in school. We are flexible if a child is out but know that many of the book(s) your child(ren) have out are put on hold by others. Your support is appreciated. One of the new recess options is for students to use an Ed Emberley book titled, Ed Emberley's Complete Funprint Drawing Book, to explore and create with the help of a blank canvas, ink pads, and markers. Click HERE to see one of our McKelvie student’s creations using this title as a guide. Our first “Search Slip” winner of the year will be drawn on Monday, November, 1, 2021. A “Search Slip” i s encouraged to be filled out when using our online catalog. Filling one of these slips is helpful if a child is not just browsing the sh...

Our “book tastings” are proving to be a hit with not only the students of McKelvie but also many staff members. Click HERE to see one of our 5th grade teachers actively participating in one of our “book tastings. Staff members will also use our school library to check out titles that they would like a whole serving of.  The McKelvie Library is open from the time the students enter our building until dismissal. Even when classes are being conducted, the library is available for students to browse, check out books or even find a comfortable chair to relax and read in. Click HERE to see a student engrossed in a book while enjoying one of our comfortable chairs. During recess there are many students who opt to come and browse and read, play one of the many games we have available (Jenga, chess, checkers, Connect Four, Rubik's Race, dominoes) work with origami paper, solve one of our Rubik's Cubes, relax with a water timer, use our cat’s cradle strings, help solve our community pu...

It is hard to believe we are at the halfway point in October! It was a short but productive week in the library. I continue to be amazed by the number of students actively using Destiny Discover to search for “good fit” books and to place holds. Our delivery/concierge service is being utilized by so many. My reading heart swells when holds are delivered to our readers and researchers.  Click HERE and HERE to see  images of our McKelvie restaurant all set up for a “book tasting.” There are more “reservations” scheduled for next week. It is amazing when a student has the ability to select what they want to “bite into further” after a “book tasting”. So many new and older titles were checked out this week as students “sampled” books. Being able to self-select books empowers our students to be active readers. Have an amazing fall weekend, McKelvie. ~ Mrs. Cote

We had our first class of the year come to the McKelvie Library to "taste books!" The tables were covered in McKelvie blue tablecloths complete with golden plates showcasing various books, vases with student-made origami flowers, flameless candles, and table reservation numbers. The students were greeted by the “chef” and listened to theme music as they entered. This was a unique and fun way to expose students to various genres of books as well as first books in a series! Reading five minute "bites or samples" of these books enabled students to self select books they found interesting and might want to check out. Click HERE to see a student sampling one of our books at the tasting. Books have been flying out of our library following these tastings. It was wonderful to hear so many students who were excited about the books they sampled. It was fun to “stir” up some excitement for reading in our school library. Currently, more reservations are being booked. Stay tune...

Happy October, McKelvie! With cooler temperatures upon us, it is a perfect time to “leaf through a good book.” 🍂  Please click HERE for one of our lightbox displays greeting students and staff in our halls outside of the library.  Classes continue to come to the library to work on creating a Destiny Collection to track their independent reading this school year. Mrs. Parnell came with her class on Thursday to create a collection. HERE is an image of us getting started from the McKelvie website. The classes have been engaged and excited to track what they have read digitally. Be sure to ask your child what “good fit” book they are reading independently.  Our new buddy bookshelf has been assembled! Mr. Dave Orleans, our day lead custodian, helped put together our shelf and secure it to the wall. I intend on adding books with two or more copies to the new shelf to promote budding reading and talking about books. It is an opportunity to foster literacy and conversatio...

Wow! It is hard to believe that it is the last Friday of September! The McKelvie Library has many digital resources available for our readers and researchers! Please click HERE to access our "Digital Resources". This page has the links to our subscription databases and is very useful for research, locating images, as well as finding the next great fiction or nonfiction title based on a book your child has read and enjoyed. Please take a moment to read the help text below the images of the databases, as it will help determine which database can best serve your child/children's needs. Please note that the database usernames and passwords are located on the second page of the Google Slides presentation. Most of these databases provide the MLA8 citation for the students. The citations just have to be copied, pasted, and formatted properly (size 12 Times New Roman font, double spaced, and the first line of the citation is left-aligned with the additional lines indented). This...

Happy Friday, McKelvie! It has been a busy week with McKelvie book deliveries continuing and the start of working with "Destiny Discover Collections.” These will continue for some time to get all of the 6th grade classes into the library to create their independent digital reading log for the 2021-2022 school year. The children from all PODs have been actively browsing and borrowing books. The library is a bustling space at our school. We love getting books into the hands of our students. Just before the first day of school, ten "Golden Tickets" were placed inside the pages of various books in the McKelvie Library. Click HERE to see one of the signs promoting the McKelvie "Golden Tickets." So far, nobody has found a “Golden Ticket,” but it certainly has been fun to promote them and answer eager childrens’ questions. I am confident that one or more will be located soon, and I will be sure to showcase this fun find when it happens. This past Wednesday was an espe...
